Does Technology Kill Empathy?

Robert Betlesky

I strongly agree with the statement that technology kills empathy. Nowadays everyone's mindset is "if it doesn't affect me why does it matter". The major issue with this is they are not showing remorse, but they are also making a joke of it. For example, TV shows like Ridiculousness people suffer painful injuries. During the show they just show the injuries and laugh at it. Social media also has a big negative effect. When scrolling through your twitter feed you often can see injuries or accidents with thousands of retweets and an un-controllable amount of laughter. The America Society needs to start showing remorse for people that suffer from devastating issues. Technology has made it even worse with the ability to share things within seconds.

  1. Robert, I completely agree with what you have said about technology killing empathy. People nowadays will go straight toward any type of
injury or painful video just for laughs. People are seriously getting hurt and we are just LOLing or LMAOing at it. This needs to change.

  2. I never even thought about the show ridiculousness. It is crazy how much people are amused by pain inflicted on others. It is actually kind of sickening. I remember reading a meme once that said "a friend will help you up when you've fallen, but a best friend will laugh at you first, and then help you up". This meme almost encourages people to be less empathetic for people who are close to them. Is it because laughter bonds people together? Or is it because of the influence of the media?
