How Relationships are Affected by Technology

Although I believe that in most cases technology helps people to create a closer bond because it keeps them in constant contact making it easier to create conversation as well as makes it easer to communicate in general, there are also cases that technology kills all intimate feelings. This is a relevant picture about the topic. What are your thoughts about the intimacy of technology?

Impact of the Industrial Revolution on Women

The impact the Industrial Revolution had on families and women is tremendous. Women were now working outside the home which provided a major step in gender equality. This also forced children to be more independent with not having a mother around every second of the day.

Does Technology Kill Empathy?

Technology: Does it breed or kill empathy?

I don't think it's easy to argue that technology is making us more empathetic. Realisticaly, it is making a less engaged and less empathetic generation of students. According to professor Jennifer Aaker, "a recent analysis of 72 studies performed on nearly 14,000 college students between 1979 and 2009 showed a sharp decline in the empathy trait over the last 10 years." (see inserted article above).

There have been many times when social media has been used to benefit the world, a community, an individual, etc... For example, "social media networks like Facebook have been used to promote fundraising and awareness about global humanitarian issues. Following Haiti’s catastrophic earthquake in January of 2010, FarmVille, a Facebook application, launched the “Sweet Seeds for Haiti” campaign, which raised $487,500 in donations within three weeks" (Levine)

On the other hand, the primary use of daily technology is not to raise money for people in need... We  use it to scroll through Instagram, Twitter, Tinder - trying to find things that temporarily entertain us.  There are always new posts, new tweets, new girls and guys to swipe on. It is exciting and new every time. We would rather sit and scroll through our phone than make conversation with the person sitting next to us. It's deceiving, though, because we fail to recognize the pleasure and satisfaction that comes from a real-life relationship, that can be much more entrtaining and valuable than technology ever will be.

Technology can be used for good things, however it is more of an entertainment addiction than it is a tool to better the world. There is still a healthy balance that needs to be focused on, but at this point in time, I think there is too much focus on technology, and not enough on face-to-face interactions.

Does Technology Kill Empathy?

I believe that technology does kill empathy because in today's society we have become so reliable on our phones to communicate. It's much easier to just send a text message or call someone on the phone rather than actually meet them face to face. However, when were sending text messages on our cell phones it is really hard to depict the tone of messages and understand the emotion in the text message compared to actually meeting face to face where you can easily figure out the tone that person is speaking in and understand the emotion of their message. Technology definitely has its benefits, however we can't really on it too much when trying to communicate because face to face human interaction is still very important.

Does Technology Kill Empathy?

The short article, "Is Technology Making Us Less Empathic?" by Gary Small Makes a couple great points that coincide with my belief that technology is indeed making us less empathetic in face-to-face interactions. One major point from the article that I would like to highlight is the face that we are introducing technology to early into kids. When children are growing up their brains are still figuring out what things like empathy are, but with the presence of so much technology the gadgets are clouding their brain and making them unable to process empathy at early ages.

Does Technology Kill Empathy?

Robert Betlesky

I strongly agree with the statement that technology kills empathy. Nowadays everyone's mindset is "if it doesn't affect me why does it matter". The major issue with this is they are not showing remorse, but they are also making a joke of it. For example, TV shows like Ridiculousness people suffer painful injuries. During the show they just show the injuries and laugh at it. Social media also has a big negative effect. When scrolling through your twitter feed you often can see injuries or accidents with thousands of retweets and an un-controllable amount of laughter. The America Society needs to start showing remorse for people that suffer from devastating issues. Technology has made it even worse with the ability to share things within seconds.

American Revolution

The American Revolution was a vital part of United States History as we gained our independence from the Britsh Empire and it created the first modern democracy with a written constitution for The United States of America. This video, "America the Story of Us: American Revolution | History," explains how we wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the Revolutionary War and it is an example of a war where the weaker contestant or the underdog won because the Americans were more determined to win. One of the main quotes I pulled fromt the video was, "The Britsh Army were fighting for a King, The Americans were fighting for their lives." I thought this was a really powerful quote because The Americans were actually fighting for something, which was for their lives and the right to live freely and it was the ultimate factor that lead to the United States Army winning the war. The Americans who fought in the American Revolution weren't just fighting for themselves, but for all future generations who now have the right to live under a democracy and most importantly, the right to live freely.

Revolution: "Solidarity against the Exploitation of Women"

One Billion Rising is a revolution that fights the exploitation of women. This revolution began in February 2012, and has become the largest action to stop violence against women in human history.

The following statistic was taken from their website: One Billion Rising.

"1 in 3 women across the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. That’s ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. EveryFebruary, we rise – in hundreds of countries across the world – to show our localcommunities and the world what one billion looks like and shine a light on the rampant impunity andinjustice that survivors most often face."

There has been a lot of attention brought to the degradation and exploitation of women already in 2017. With the recent inauguration of President Donal Trump, many women, and men, have expressed that they've felt sickened by his negative and derogative comments towards many individuals, as well as groups of people. This revolution, although not targeting Trump, is a brilliant way to combat his (and many others') blatant disrespect of certain women.
